Early Life (Lizzo Biography)
Melissa Viviane Jefferson Born on April 27, 1988, Lizzo is a Michigan gem who later relocated to Houston, Texas. The Grammy-winning artist’s love for music can be traced back to when she was just a teenager. A classically trained flautist, Lizzo began rapping in 2006. At the tender age of 14, she formed a musical group with her friends called the ‘Conrow Clique.’ It was at this time that she acquired the name that now distinguishes her as an incredible artist, ‘Lizzo.’
Growing up in a family of varied musical tastes, Lizzo attributes this variety to having influenced her songs in the coming years. As a student, Lizzo was a part of her school’s marching band and played the piccolo. As she got older, her love for music became even richer, which prompted her to enrol at the University of Houston in 2005. She, however, dropped out before she could complete her bachelor’s. But fret not, since this was also the time her music career began to pick up a significant pace. The hardships that she experienced, spending many nights in her car, would all soon pay off.
Lizzo Career
While living in Minneapolis, Lizzo performed with several hip-hop groups, performing locally, thus giving further fuel to her ability to rap. It was during this time that she formed a three-piece all-female rap group called ‘The Chalice.’ They released their debut album, ‘We Are the Chalice’, which found success locally.
On October 15, 2013, Lizzo released her hip-hop focused debut album ‘Lizzobangers’, which received critical acclaim and appreciation, with the Guardian stating, “At times joyous nonsensical, Lizzo’s stream-of-consciousness rhymes can also be lethally pointed.”
Following appreciation and a never-ending desire to make music, Lizzo released her second album ‘Big Grrrl Small World’ on December 1, 2015. Herein, Paste praised Lizzo’s “ability to rap and sing with equal tenacity.” In between the releases of her first and second albums, Lizzo received the opportunity to feature on the song “BoyTrouble”, a part of Prince and 3rdEyeGirl’s album ‘Plectrumelectrum.”, even appearing as a musical guest on David Letterman’s late night talk show on October 7, 2014.
This success was followed by the release of Lizzo’s first major-label album after being signed by Atlantic Records. The album ‘Coconut Oil’ released its lead single as a song of massive prominence even today. ‘Good as Hell’ as the body-positivity and empowering song, helped create a place for the album where every single song was co-written by Lizzo. The album received positive reviews. To promote the success of the album further, Lizzo embarked on the Good as Hell Tour in 2017.
