What exactly is American Idol?

Ruben Studdard from American Idol Winners Season 2
Ruben Studdard won American Idol in 2003, surpassing Clay Aiken by a very few votes. Later that year, the Birmingham, Alabama, native was shortlisted for a GRAMMY Award for “Superstar” for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

Fantasia Barrino from American Idol Winners Season 3
At 19, R&B singer Fantasia Barrino won the coveted championship, defeating Diana DeGarmo, Jasmine Trias, and Jennifer Hudson. Her story, Life Is Not a Fairy Tale, was published in 2005 and is now a New York Times bestseller. Barrino’s debut album, Free Yourself, received four GRAMMY nominations, and she won her 1st GRAMMY Award for Best Female R&B Singing Style for “Bittersweet” in 2011.
She made her Broadway debut in The Color Purple, went on to play Mahalia Jackson in the film Mahalia!, and came to Broadway in 2013 in After Midnight. The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame inducted her in 2014.
She engaged businessman Kendall Taylor in 2015 after welcoming her second child, reported to be fathered by fellow Idol competitor Antwaun Cook.
Carrie Underwood from American Idol Winners Season 4
Carrie Underwood won Season 4 in 2005, beating out runner-up Bo Bice. Underwood, now 37, is a multi-platinum music artist with 70 million albums sold worldwide. She is a Golden Globe Award candidate, a 3-time ACM and CMA winner, and a 2-time ACM Entertainer of the Year.
She has won three GRAMMY Awards and multiple Billboard and American Music Awards. Underwood was welcomed into the Grand Ole Opry in 2008. Underwood has six studio albums to her credit, the most recent Cry Pretty in 2018.
Aside from music, the Oklahoma native founded CALIA by Carrie in 2015 and launched Find Your Path, a New York Times bestseller fitness, and lifestyle book, in 2020. In 2010, Underwood wedded NHL player Mike Fisher, with whom she had two boys, Isaac and Jacob.
Taylor Hicks from American Idol Winners Season 5
At the age of 29, he became the oldest performer to win American Idol 2006, beating out Katharine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, and Kellie Pickler. His debut single, “Do I Make You Proud,” scored No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold.
The silver-haired heartthrob was shortly named People magazine’s Hottest Bachelor for 2006. He has since recorded three studio albums, the most recently released in 2009. He was the first Idol winner to have a long-term tenure in Las Vegas, which started in 2012. He starred in Grease on Broadway in 2008 and on the national tour the following year.
Hicks, who is now 43, started hosting INSP’s Slate Plate in 2016 and published his last single, “Six Strings and Diamond Rings,” in 2017.

Jordin Sparks from American Idol Winners Season 6
In 2005, Jordin Sparks, then 17 years old, became the youngest participant to win American Idol. Sparks’ self-titled debut album went platinum, and her single “No Air” was the highest-selling single by any Idol finalist until Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger and Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” beat her out.
Since then, she’s won numerous honors and nominations, such as an American Music Award in 2008 and her first GRAMMY consideration in 2009. She’s also dabbled in theatre, making her Broadway debut in 2010 and her big-screen debut in 2012’s Sparkle opposite Whitney Houston and releasing a line of perfumes. After a five-year break, she returned to recording, releasing a mixtape in 2014 and her 3rd studio album, Right Here, in 2015.
Sparks married fitness model Dana Isaiah in 2017 after a 3-year relationship with Jason Derulo. The couple welcomed a son in 2018.
David Cook from American Idol Winners Season 7
David Cook, a native of Blue Springs, Missouri, won American Idol in 2008, defeating David Archuleta and Jason Castro, becoming the show’s seventh winner. Later that year, he released his self-titled album, which has already been certified platinum, followed by This Loud Morning in 2011 and Digital Vein in 2015.
Cook has led four tours and starred on Broadway in Kinky Boots since winning American Idol. His older brother, Adam, died due to cancer in 2009, in the same year he returned to perform “Permanent” in memory of his sibling. Cook got married to Racheal Stump in Nashville in 2015.
Kris Allen from American Idol Winners Season 8
Kris Allen upset Adam Lambert in the 2009 competition, which was considered an upset. Allen’s coronation song, “No Boundaries,” and his cover of “Heartless” both charted high on the Billboard Hot 100 after his victory. Allen’s self-titled album was published later that year, and Thank You, Camellia.
His second major-label album was released in 2012. His fifth and most recent studio album, Letting You In, was released in 2016, though he released a new album called 10 a decade after his Idol win, which included revised songs from his prior albums.

Lee DeWyze from American Idol Winners Season 9
Lee DeWyze, aged 24 years old, defeated Crystal Bowersox, Michael Lynche, and Casey James to win American Idol in 2010. Later that year, the Illinois native won Choice TV: Male Reality/Variety Star at the Teen Choice Awards.
He had a solo career and a band named the Lee DeWyze Band, which released 2 albums before Idol. DeWyze released the album, Live It Up in 2010 after winning the musical competition.
Since then, he’s released 6 albums, the most recent of which, Paranoia, was published in 2018. In 2012, DeWyze married actress, Jonna Walsh.
Scotty McCreery from American Idol Winners Season 10
The competition between Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery for the title of American Idol season 10 winner was fierce, but McCreery emerged victorious in 2011. Later that year, at the age of 17, the North Carolina native released an album, Clear as Day, quickly certified platinum.
He opened for country stars Brad Paisley and The Band Perry the following year and released a seasonal album, Christmas With Scotty McCreery.
Since then, he’s recorded two additional albums, See You Tonight in 2013 and Season Change in 2018, and his first country No. 1 single, “Five More Minutes.” In 2016, he published a Go Big or Go Home book, which he presented as a travelogue. McCreery graduated from high school in 2012 and went on to North Carolina State University to earn a graduate degree in communications.
In 2018, he married his longtime girlfriend, Gabi Dugal.
Phillip Phillips from American Idol Winners Season 11
Phillip Phillips, then 21, was crowned in 2012, defeating Jessica Sanchez. Since then, the Georgia native has released the album, The World From This Side of the Moon, which has gone multi-platinum, and his first single, the mega-hit “Home,” which has gone platinum.
Despite health concerns, he went on tour with John Mayer in 2014 and published his second album, Behind the Light. Despite public disagreements with his record label, he released his new album, Collateral, in 2018. Phillips also dabbled in acting, appearing in 2018 episodes of Hawaii Five-0 as a diamond smuggler.
He married Hannah Blackwell in 2015, and their son Patch was born in 2019.
Candice Glover from American Idol Winners Season 12
Candice Glover, then 23, won the show’s in 2013, defeating our runner-up Kree Harrison after auditioning three times. Glover was the first woman to win American Idol since Jordin Sparks in 2007.
The singer tried but failed to deliver a thank you speech while crying. She has released 2 singles, but as of early 2020, she has not made another album till now.
Caleb Johnson from American Idol Winners Season 13
In 2014, rocker Caleb Johnson beat out fellow competitor Jena Irene in a fierce competition that included a night of exciting performances, including Johnson rocking out with KISS! In the same year, the Elijah Hooker frontman launched his single titled album, Testify, and joined a new band, Caleb Johnson and the Ramblin’ Saints.
In 2019, they launched their first self-published album, Born from Southern Ground.
Nick Fradiani from American Idol Winners Season 14
It was Nick Fradiani and Clark Beckham who had made their way to the top going into the final night of competition. Fradiani demonstrated that he had what it took to win. Fradiani finished the program by performing his new single, “Beautiful Life,” which brought his family, friends, and the crowd to tears.
Fradiani began his professional career as a singer with the band Beach Avenue, with whom he appeared on America’s Got Talent’s ninth season. Following his Idol victory, the Connecticut native signed with Big Machine Label Group and released Hurricane in 2016, followed by Where We Left Off in 2017 as an indie artist.
He traveled with the rock band The Alternate Routes in 2017 and played Lorenzo Anello in A Bronx Tale on a national tour.
Trent Harmon from American Idol Winners Season 15
Trent Harmon surprised everyone by winning the 15th season of American Idol on Fox, defeating presumed frontrunner La’Porsha Renae. “I know I have a God-given skill, but I decided not to take it for granted,” Harmon said tearfully after winning, before playing his single, “Falling,” which he co-wrote with Idol judge Keith Urban.
In 2016, he released his self-titled EP, followed by his first studio album; you Got them All, in 2018.
Maddie Poppe from American Idol Winners Season 16
During the epic two-hour finale of Idol’s first season on ABC, Maddie Poppe sang a “Rainbow Connection” duet with Kermit the Frog himself. Still, the Clarksville, Iowa, native had a far more special performance moment with the season’s runner-up, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, as the pair did perform a “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” medley after revealing that they had started dating.
Poppe had previously appeared on The Voice and released an EP before Idol. Poppe released her debut studio album, Whirlwind, in 2019 after winning Season 16.
Laine Hardy from American Idol Winners Season 17
Laine Hardy was declared champion in 2018, defeating finalists Alejandro Aranda and Madison Vandenburg, and he couldn’t contain his joy when speaking with ET backstage. The 20-year-old artist, who previously participated in the show last season, initially declined to audition.
Instead, he joined a friend at the Idol audition, where judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie encouraged him to try again, which he did. Hardy, 19, released a three-song EP called In the Bayou in 2018, followed by the single “Blue Christmas,” and went on his first headlining tour in the fall of 2019.
In April 2020, two more tracks, “Ground I Grew Up On” and “Let There Be Country,” will be released.
Just Sam from American Idol Winners Season 18
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the first-ever remote finals featured a final five of Dillon James, Francisco Martin, Just Sam, Arthur Gunn, and Jonny West, who each performed twice, giving them two chances of winning over voters and capture America’s heart.
Just Sam was crowned the new American Idol champion, and she partied with her grandmother through a video chat from her home studio.
Chayce Beckham from American Idol Winners Season 19
The rocker from Apple Valley, California, stunned the audience throughout the season and brought his raspy voice and commanding presence to the Season 19 finale, where he won big. Beckham defeated third-place competitor Grace Kinstler and runner-up Willie Spence, with three outstanding performances.
He began with The Beatles’ classic “Blackbird,” then Chris Stapleton’s “Fire Away,” and Ed Sheeran’s “Afterglow.” As golden confetti showered around him on stage, he finished the show with a live rendition of his original song “23.”
