What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a commemoration of June 19, 1865 when the Union Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, issued a General Order No.3 proclaiming that the enslaved African Americans were free.

The order stated that “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

What began as an informal celebration of freedom by locals in Galveston eventually grew into a wider commemoration of the end of slavery.

The federal holiday is observed not just by banks but also by most schools and colleges such as Columbia University, Harvard University. Most federal offices will also remain closed.

A twitter user understood Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday by quoted Malcom X “the white man will try to satisfy us with symbolic victories rather than economic equity and real justice.”

While another user pointed out “You can keep fighting for substantive change and not feel appeased by the Juneteenth holiday, but you should also understand that Black people have been advocating for this holiday for decades.”

Why Juneteenth is So Important?

The topic of Juneteenth is significant to us as it’s an important moment for our African American struggle for liberation. The message our forefathers received more than 157 years ago was the primary catalyst for thinking about the meaning of freedom for our current society as a whole.

This is a unique celebration because it brings an opportunity for change that was made available to group of people who had been bound by chains.
