While asserting that Gerard Pique is “suffering” in the wake of his split from wife Shakira, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has given the defender his complete support.
After 11 years of being together, Pique and the Colombian singer made their separation announcement last month. According to reports in Spain, Pique was to fault for the breakup since he had deviated from the pop star.
Despite recent reports that they had been in a “open relationship,” neither Pique nor Shakira have responded to those accusations. Laporta has now provided an insight into the defender’s thoughts as he gave the Spaniard his complete support, with pre-season beginning soon for Barca and Pique.
Laporta said “Pique is suffering. As much as we imagine, we have in our imagination players with fame, money and everything we like, but they are people and Pique is a great person. He is one of the captains, he is lucky, and he has given a lot and he has to give us a lot.”
Laporta added, “And he has had a situation that is not at all pleasant, having children at a young age, and Pique deserves the respect and love of the supporters. Do not pay attention to reports that attempt to paint him as a hedonistic, emotionless man whose life is slipping away.”
“I feel fortunate to have met him and to have treated him with respect. The individual in pain is extraordinary. And we must assist him. I’ll be the first to show him the affection he deserves.”
Pique was allegedly in an open relationship with Shakira when Laporta insisted that he was suffering. If those claims are true, it suggests that infidelity might not have been the cause of the divorce.
“They agreed to “do what you want and I’ll do what I want,” but they wanted to seem to be a couple in public. Pique did not commit infidelity, according to a very close friend of me.” Antonio Aviles told ‘Viva la Vida’.
Laporta also claims that Pique has decided not to retire from football to become a full-time entrepreneur.
When hacked messages revealed Pique’s company had earned £20 million from the Spanish Super Cup being staged in Saudi Arabia in 2019, the defender was accused of engaging in questionable business practises. The defender for Barcelona vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
