13 Reasons Why star Tommy Dorfman Wanted to Transition 'A Lot Sooner'

13 reasons why the actress Tommy Dorfman has opened up about how her work within Hollywood has changed her life and how they aren't always in sync.

Dorfman was discussing her gender transition in the show Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson when she spoke about her first job and how it relates to her gender identity..

"In those early years of working, I was just trying to understand [myself]," she explained in reference to her role in the Netflix program 13 Reasons Why was her first professional role as an actor.

However, securing that role put other commitments put on hold.

"I think if I hadn't booked that job I would have transitioned a lot sooner," Dorfman told.

"I believe that because of my job being so closely tied to my appearance, body and what I my persona was identified as, it slowed my personal growth as well as some of the maturing in my 20s.

I made choices which were not in alignment with my true self or what I desired -in part, due to fear."

She added that her marriage in 2016 to her longtime lover Peter Zurkuhlen had been "probably" one of those choices that has made the couple be more "safe" in Hollywood and life. 

They and Zurkuhlen separated in February of this year..

"It felt like a safe, secure space that I can carve out for myself in a world that was ever-changing," she stated about her marriage.

"I was just dealing with stuff that I didn't know about yet." She explained that prior to her transition she had spent her entire life feeling that she wasn't feel comfortable.

"I always felt that I wasn't destined for the society which I was in. What do you think of people who are thinking, 'I should've had been born during the 1980s or something?

I've always felt this way," she said. "And the moment I began changing, I thought"oh no, but I am intended for this body and intended for this moment and made for this planet.

I was wearing the wrong size sweater -- three sizes too smallfor the last the past 28 years." We're grateful she's found clothes that are suitable.
